GENEVA (AFP)---Swiss authorities said Thursday they have cancelled a concert by a popular Croatian singer because his lyrics breach anti-racism laws.
Marko "Thompson" Perkovic was due to play a concert on Saturday in the northern Swiss town of Lengnau in Aargau canton, but the gig was called off after the authorities became aware of his lyrics, local official Kurt Schmid said.
The authorities said they feared the concert could spark public disorder.
Some 40,000 people of Croatian origin are estimated to be living in Switzerland, but there are many more Serbs -- around 200,000 -- and other nationalities from the former Yugoslavia.
Perkovic gained popularity with patriotic songs during Croatia's 1991-1995 war of independence.
He has repeatedly denied that he is a fascist or anti-Semite, but at one of his concerts last year in Croatia, many in the audience wore uniforms or symbols belonging to the fascist Ustasha regime that ran the pro-Nazi Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during World War II.
The Ustasha killed hundreds of thousands of Serbs, Jews, anti-fascist Croatians, Roma and others in concentration camps during the war.
