PARIS (EJP)---Jean Sarkozy, the son of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, celebrated last weekend his engagement to school sweetheart Jessica Sebaoun-Darty, heiress of a Jewish family that controls Darty, one of France's largest consumer electronics chain.
The celebration took place in Neuilly-sur-Seine, the chic Paris suburb where Jean Sarkozy won election earlier this year as a local councilor and where his father started his own political career when he was 28.
According to the French press, the two young fiancés, who know each other from Saint James school in Neuilly, made a trip to Israel earlier this month "in order to learn more about Jewish culture."
The President turned up with his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy for the engagement party. Jean offered his fiancée a Tiffany diamond.
Nicolas Sarkozy has Jewish roots as his mother was born to the Mallah family, one of the oldest Jewish families of Salonika in Greece.
In another sign of his political ambitions, the 21-year-old "Sarko Junior", whose long golden locks and dazzling smile have made him a teen sex symbol, was elected on Monday head of his father’s centre-right UMP party group on his regional council.
Jean is the second son from Nicolas Sarkozy's first marriage to Marie-Dominique Culioli, the daughter of a Corsican chemist.
He is a second year law student and an amateur actor.
