BRUSSELS (EJP)---Israel’s Foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman will have Monday in Brussels several bilateral meetings with colleagues from EU countries.
The 27 EU Foreign Ministers are to hold that day their monthly meeting and discuss in particular the situation in Haiti and the Middle East peace process after the visit in the region this week by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton.
On Thursday, Lieberman said Europe should convince the Palestinian Authority to halt its attempts to pressure Israel into making concessions by threatening to cancel negotiations.
“The countries of Europe must clarify to the Palestinians that renewed negotiations are the common interest of all parties. The Israeli government has expressed its willingness to conduct direct negotiations with the Palestinians since it began in office, and has made significant steps and gestures toward them, but we will not agree to a policy of blackmail as a condition for dialogue."
Benjamin Netanyahu's government has agreed to temporarily freeze construction of Jewish homes in the West Bank and to remove dozens of checkpoints and roadblocks.
During a press conference on Wednesday in Jerusalem with visiting EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton, Lieberman rejected as “not reasonable” pressure on Israel to refrain from building housing units in East Jerusalem.
During his stay in Brussels, Lieberman will also meet with the Belgian Jewish community in Brussels and Antwerp.
