French comedian Diedonne will not be able to perform one of his shows in the the Swiss town of Locle next year after the local Casino Theatre cancelled the performance of "1905", the French artist’s latest show that offended many people.

"It is too delicate", Noel Antonini, the responsible for programming at the Casino Theatre, told AP on Thursday, confirming the information published the same day in the daily newspapers the Express and the Impartial.

"I defend the artist on stage as well as the quality of his spectacle, but as I will not be here next year, I will not be able to defend the choice of this programming."

Antonini also notes that it is very difficult to dissociate the artist from the man and his remarks, which he makes off-stage.

Recurring controversy

Dieudonne was at the centre of a polemic two years ago in Geneva, when the environmental administrative advisor, Patrick Mugny, decided to censure the artist’s spectacle "Patrick’s Divorce" after comments made to the press were judged anti-Semitic.

The artist was finally able to perform, but without however presenting any written excuses to the Jewish community.

On 17 March 2006, the self declared candidate for the 2007 French presidential election, also attended an anti-racist event in the city of Calvin, the Crossroads of Thinking and Action Against Anti-Black Racism (CRAN).

Considered to be tendentious, his “performance” there created a bad atmosphere among the guests.

"In short, he claimed that anti-black racism is worse than the Shoah,” commented Green Party representative for the district of Vaud, Anne-Catherine Menetrey. “Once his speech was finished, he went to shake hands at the end of the room, without paying any attention to the speeches of the speakers who followed him."
