BUDAPEST (AFP)---Thousands of protesters of law enforcement agencies and the armed forces demonstrated against the government's austerity programme along with two far-right organisations Friday, burning a Jewish emblem.
The policemen, professional soldiers, customs, prison and civil guards as well as firefighters joined forces to voice their anger with the government's aim to abolish their last privilege -- early retirement.
During the demonstration, a white cloth bearing the Star of David and resembling an Israeli flag was burned, according to Hungarian public television M1.
Several members of the extreme-right militias For a Brighter Future and Defense Force joined the demonstration, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
"Many organizations indicated their intention to join, among others a Roma civilian guard group too," in addition to the Brighter Future milita, chairman
of the organiser union, Peter Konya, said.
The Roma civilian guard, however, declined to join the protest when news of
the far-right militia's presence broke.
The two far-right vigilante organizations became known after launching patrols in countryside settlements with large Roma populations in what they said was an operation "to restore peace".
Friday's demonstration, which is one in a series of massive action against
the centre-right government's planned austerity measures, saw a honking
motorcade driving across town to arrive in front of Hungary's parliament.
Once there, protesters set off several smoke bombs and fire broke out twice on the square during the evening walk with torches, MTI reported.
