WASHINGTON (EJP)---Eric Cantor, a 45-year-old Jewish Republican congressman from the sate of Virginia, has joined the shortlist to be John McCain's vice-presidential running mate.
Cantor would be the first Jewish vice-president, an historic milestone that Senator Joe Lieberman just missed in 2000 when Al Gore lost to George W Bush by 567 votes.
McCain is running almost level with Barack Obama in national polls.
Cantor is a supporter of strong US-Israel relations, co-sponsoring legislation that would cut off all US taxpayer aid to the Palestinian Authority.
Cantor's cousin, Daniel Cantor Wultz, died as the result of a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv which was carried out by Islamic Jihad on April 17, 2006.
